Mountain Landscape with Five Bridges [lower right] is a 1740 ink by Canaletto, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a wavy river with five small bridges. On the left, a town sits by the water with buildings and ships. Trees line the riverbanks, and hills rise in the background. The whole scene is made of scratchy lines—no color, just black and white. The artist used a sharp tool to carve into metal, then inked it to make the lines. This method is called etching. Next, look up etching to see how it works.
Giovanni Antonio Canal (18 October 1697 – 19 April 1768), commonly known as Canaletto (Italian: ), was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school.
