History & Provenance
Commissioned on 9 November 1597 by the Capilla de San José in Toledo, this altarpiece was executed by El Greco between 1597 and 1599 and installed as part of the chapel's retablo ensemble, where it remained until 1906. That year the chapel directors sold the original to the Parisian firm Boussod Valadon, replacing the canvas with a copy. The painting was then acquired by Peter A. B. Widener of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.
Upon Widener's death the work passed by inheritance, through a power of appointment exercised by his son Joseph E. Widener, to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it is held with accession number 1942.9.26 and remains on public display.
