This sketchbook page shows quick, loose drawings in brown ink. On the right, there’s a close-up of a boy’s face in profile, with heavy lines crisscrossing his hair. Below, five small figures—some standing, some bending—are drawn in a similar hurried style. The left page has a tall tree, a simple cottage, and a few scattered lines suggesting a path or fence. The crisscrossed lines on the boy’s head are a technique called cross-hatching. It builds up dark tones by layering intersecting strokes. Try looking up cross-hatching to see how artists use it to create depth.
