The fragment was cut from a larger altarpiece or devotional panel that has not survived in full. It remained in private collections in the Low Countries before entering a museum inventory in the early twentieth century, where it has been catalogued as part of Briesghel the Younger’s oeuvre and attributed to his workshop period.

Jan Briesghel the Younger continued the thematic legacy of his father and grandfather, who frequently depicted biblical narratives infused with detailed still-life elements.
