About this work

You see a small white church beside a canal, sunlight bouncing off the water and the stone walls. Jongkind painted this quickly, outdoors, with loose brushstrokes. The light feels real because he caught it in one sitting—no studio tricks. He was one of the first to do this regularly, which later inspired the Impressionists. To see how light changes a scene, look up *impasto*.
