From the collection of National Gallery of Art
The Artist's Mother Seated at a Table, Looking Right is a 1631 ink by Rembrandt, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows an older woman sitting in a chair, wrapped in a heavy cloak with a hood pulled low. Her hands rest on the table in front of her, and she looks off to the side, her face lined with age. The drawing is mostly black lines on a light background, with some shading to show the folds in her clothes and the texture of the chair. The artist used a technique that lets them scratch into the metal plate to create the lines. This makes the image look like it’s made of pure line and shadow.
