Various Figures and Landscapes: A Lost Horseman Enquiring the Way is a 1649 by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This etching shows a lone rider on horseback, dressed in old-fashioned armor and a wide-brimmed hat. The horse is walking toward a small group of people gathered near a tree and a cluster of bushes. To the right, another person stands holding something, while the background has a few scattered trees and a rocky hill. The rider looks lost, maybe asking for directions—just like the title says. The drawing is simple but full of tiny details, like the folds in the rider’s clothes or the texture of the horse’s mane. If you like this style, check out the Baroque movement next.
Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
