Raja Jai Singh of Kulu is a 1715 paint by Unknown, a Baroque work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows two figures standing under a dark, rounded canopy. The person on the right wears a bright yellow outfit with gold embroidery, a tall hat, and holds a branch with pink flowers. The person on the left is dressed in white with a yellow sash, raising one hand as if gesturing. The bright colors and dramatic contrast between light and dark shapes give the scene a lively feel. This style is part of the larger Baroque movement, which often used bold colors and movement. Look up Baroque to see more paintings with this energetic, detailed style.
The painting depicts Raja Jai Singh of Kulu, rendered in opaque watercolour on paper around 1715. He is shown standing to the right, dressed in a yellow robe, a yellow and orange striped turban, and a floral garland, accompanied by a boy attendant. The work was acquired in 1954 from Maggs Bros. for £150, originally part of Abdullah & Sons' stock in Udaipur, and previously held in the family collection of Thakur Iswari Singh of Bilaspur.
