Portrait of a Youth, a tempera painting on poplar panel measuring 43.5 × 46.2 cm, was created by Sandro Botticelli in 1484. The work remained in the artist's native Florence before entering the collection of the French aristocrat James-Alexandre, comte de Pourtalès-Gorgier by 1841. It passed through the Triqueti family, was sold in Paris in 1865, and later entered the stock of dealers Duveen Brothers, Arnold Seligmann and Wildenstein.
By 1920 it was acquired by Carl W. Hamilton, then by Clarence H. Mackay, and finally purchased by the A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust in December 1936, which gifted it to the National Gallery of Art in 1937, where it is accessioned as 1937.1.2.
