Attendez... il faut encore ceci... is a 1866 ink by Honoré Daumier, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows three odd-looking guys in a weird setup. Two men sit on boxes like they’re waiting, wearing hats and shabby clothes. Between them, a clown-like figure holds a sign that says "VEKETTE" and looks like it’s being weighed on a scale. Above them, a stick with a hook balances something invisible. The caption at the bottom reads like a joke: *"Attendez... Il faut encore ceci pour que le poids y soit"*—which means something like *"Wait... You still need this for it to balance."* The whole thing feels like a silly comment on fairness or justice. If you like this weird style, check out lithography next—it’s the printing trick Daumier used.
Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870.
