Ce matin avant l'aurore... is a 1839 ink by Honoré Daumier, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
You see a small, quiet room at dawn. A candle flickers on a table. Two adults sit in bed in loose clothes. A child stands between them, holding a piece of paper, looking up with wide eyes. Soft morning light comes through a window. Daumier made this in 1839 using a print method called lithography. Back then, artists drew on special stone slabs to make prints. This one feels extra personal because the candlelight and soft edges make the scene warm and close. Try looking up Daumé, Honoré to see more work like this.
Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870.
