La Partie de volant is a 1869 ink by Honoré Daumier, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two women playing a game with a shuttlecock. One woman, labeled "Guerre" (War), holds a bat and looks fierce. The other, labeled "Paix" (Peace), holds a bat too but looks calm. Above them floats a head labeled "Europe," watching the game. The title *La Partie de volant* means "the shuttlecock game." The rough lines and simple shapes make it feel fast and raw. Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870.
