You see a group of men lounging by the river, some in the water, some on the grass, under a hazy sky. This is a practice sketch Seurat made before his big finished painting. He used tiny dots of bright color to make the light feel real, but also drew sharp outlines around everything—like a coloring book with sunlight. It’s not loose and quick like other paintings of the time; it’s careful and planned. To see how he turned this sketch into the final work, look up *Bathers at Asnières* by Georges Seurat (French, 1859–1891).
