After Diot’s death, the painting was not included in his estate sale of 8 March 1897 nor in the 17 June 1933 sale of his collection, indicating it had left his holdings before that date.
It later belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon in Upperville, Virginia, who gifted it to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., in 1994.
The painting is held by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., where it entered the collection as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon in 1994.
Its accession record corresponds to the 1994 gift from the Mellons, having previously formed part of the Diot collection in Paris during the late 19th century.
