Landscape with a Cottage and a Large Tree
1641
ink
From the collection of National Gallery of Art
Landscape with a Cottage and a Large Tree is a 1641 ink by Rembrandt, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a quiet scene of a small wooden cottage half-hidden by a big, leafy tree. The tree’s branches spread wide, shading the house and a few scattered bushes. In front of the cottage, a tiny garden has a few plants and a barrel. Beyond the tree, a hill rises, and far off, a distant town sits by a river. The artist used sharp lines to show light and shadow, making the scene feel real. This is an etching, which means the image was scratched into metal and then printed. Next, look up etching to see how this technique works.
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (15 July 1606 – 4 October 1669), known mononymously as Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker, and draughtsman.
