Self-Portrait Etching at a Window is a 1648 ink by Rembrandt, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a man sitting by a window, looking straight ahead. He wears a dark hat, a ruffled collar, and a simple coat. His hands rest on the windowsill, and outside, you can barely make out trees or branches. The artist used different lines to show light and shadow, making the face look almost three-dimensional. It’s made using a technique where ink is pushed into lines carved into a metal plate. Look up etching to see how artists create prints this way.
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (15 July 1606 – 4 October 1669), known mononymously as Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker, and draughtsman.
