Auguste Renoir executed the oil painting Woman by a Fence in 1866. The work's documented ownership history begins with the Parisian dealer Ambroise Vollard (1866–1939). It subsequently entered the collection of Captain Edward H. Molyneux (1891–1974) in Paris, where it was recorded by 1952 and exhibited as part of his holdings at the National Gallery of Art that same year.
On 15 August 1955, Molyneux sold the canvas to Ailsa Mellon Bruce (1901–1969) of New York. Following Bruce's death, the painting was bequeathed to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1970, where it remains in the permanent collection.
