You see a quiet Dutch field in fall: golden grass, bare trees, a gray sky, and a single figure walking a dirt path. The artist painted this wet-on-wet—brushstrokes still soft, colors blending right on the canvas. That’s how they caught the damp, heavy air of the polder, the low land reclaimed from water. We don’t know who made it, but the feel is real: cold mist, muddy boots, the last leaves clinging on. To see more like it, visit the Rijksmuseum.
