Price's Candle-Works is a 1875 ink by James McNeill Whistler, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a row of industrial buildings with tall chimneys, drawn in quick, light lines. A river runs below, with a boat carrying cargo or people. The paper has a textured, off-white look—like old paper—and the lines are simple, almost sketchy. The artist used drypoint, a technique where sharp tools scratch into metal plates to create lines. This left a rough, slightly fuzzy edge to the marks. Next, check out Whistler, James McNeill to see more of his industrial sketches.
James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American painter in oils and watercolor, and printmaker, active during the American Gilded Age and based primarily in the United Kingdom.
