About

Vie et Lumière was a Belgian Luminist exhibiting society founded in 1904, centred on Emile Claus and the Lys valley painters who championed open-air light painting in the manner of French Impressionism. James Ensor's involvement is disputed in the literature; the group's core was Claus and his circle rather than the Symbolist-leaning Ensor. It organised exhibitions promoting the Belgian Luminist aesthetic until the First World War disrupted activity.
