About this work

This lithograph shows a bearded rider on a horse carrying a giant bouquet. Three heads pop out of the flowers, grinning at us. A little dog trots behind, adding to the chaos. Daumier made this for a French humor magazine. People then loved political jokes, and he used the bouquet to mock how leaders got silly gifts. The drawing feels quick, like a cartoon you’d see today.
