Copy after the Death of St Francis, Domenico Ghirlandaio in the Sassetti Chapel, Chiesa di Santa Trinita (Florence) is a 1860 watercolor by Domenico Ghirlandaio, a Impressionism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows a group of people around a bed, where a man lies still with his hands crossed. The room looks like a church interior, with tall columns, red curtains, and a bright red circle in the ceiling. Some people are standing, some kneel, and one holds a long staff. The colors are mostly muted—whites, grays, and browns—with a few red and blue accents. The man on the bed appears to be the focus, surrounded by others who look like monks or priests. The setting suggests a moment of mourning or ceremony, with some figures holding books or crosses. Next, look up Ghirlandaio, Domenico to see how he painted real-life scenes.
A watercolour by Cesare Mariannecci from 1860 reproduces Domenico Ghirlandaio’s depiction of Saint Francis on his deathbed, positioned centrally beneath a portico with columns. Surrounded by figures, the scene extends into a distant landscape in the background. The work was commissioned by the Arundel Society and later issued as a chromolithograph the same year.
