Copy after Zacharias writes down the name of his Son, Domenico Ghirlandaio in the Tornabuoni Chapel, Santa Maria Novella (Florence) is a 1860 watercolor by Domenico Ghirlandaio, a Impressionism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows a group of people in a grand, arched room with tall columns. In the center, an older man sits holding a baby while a woman kneels beside him. Others stand around, some pointing or talking. The clothing looks old-fashioned, and the background opens to a distant landscape. The colors are soft but bright, with reds, blues, and greens standing out. The Latin words at the top mean "John is his name," hinting this scene is about naming a child. The artist copied an older painting, but kept the same careful details. Look up Ghirlandaio, Domenico to see how he painted real people in everyday moments.
The watercolour depicts a scene in an ornately decorated interior with arched elements, featuring a group of figures. A woman in the center presents a baby, while an elderly man, identified as Zacharias, records a name on a sheet resting on his lap. The work was created as a copy of Ghirlandaio’s fresco in the Tornabuoni Chapel and later reproduced as a chromolithograph in 1867 by Storch and Kramer under Ludwig Gruner’s direction. It was acquired by the current holding institution in 1995 from the National Gallery of London.
