The story of this work

Overview

A watercolour by Christian Schultz, dated 1864, reproduces the Last Supper fresco painted by Domenico Ghirlandaio around 1480 in the refectory of the Ognissanti Church in Florence. The scene depicts Christ and the twelve apostles seated at a long, U-shaped table beneath an open portico, with trees visible in the background. The work was commissioned by the Arundel Society to disseminate knowledge of Renaissance art, particularly Italian Old Masters, reflecting nineteenth-century interest in early European art.
