You see a rocky cliff at sunrise, its face lit in pink and gray. Below, a small beach meets dark waves under a pale sky. The sun barely peeks above the horizon. Courbet painted this on the coast of northern France, likely in one go while facing the sea. He used thick paint to build texture, making the stone feel rough and real. This way of applying paint is called impasto — it leaves brushmarks you can almost touch. He didn’t idealize nature; he showed it as heavy, wet, and raw. If you like how the light hits the cliff, look up the technique: impasto.
