Sheet of Studies: Self-Portrait, a Beggar Couple, etc.
1632
From the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art
Sheet of Studies: Self-Portrait, a Beggar Couple, etc. is a 1632 by Rembrandt, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a face turned slightly away, with messy hair and a shadowed jaw. Below it, a rough drawing of a hunched-over couple, their forms tangled in quick, uneven lines. The paper is dirty and worn, with smudges and stray marks around the edges. The artist worked fast, layering dark lines over lighter ones to build up shapes. This style was common for practice drawings back then. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how light and shadow create drama.
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (15 July 1606 – 4 October 1669), known mononymously as Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker, and draughtsman.
