The Descent from the Cross by Torchlight
1654
From the collection of Cleveland Museum of Art
The Descent from the Cross by Torchlight is a 1654 by Rembrandt, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This etching shows a dimly lit scene where a group of men carefully lower a body wrapped in cloth from a cross. The figures are bundled in heavy robes, their faces shadowed and tense. In the foreground, another man kneels beside a long wooden stretcher, while a few others stand around, watching. The darkness and dramatic lighting focus attention on the struggle of the figures. The artist used deep contrasts between light and shadow to create a sense of urgency and emotion. Look up chiaroscuro to see how this lighting technique works.
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (15 July 1606 – 4 October 1669), known mononymously as Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker, and draughtsman.
