History & Provenance
The portrait of Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, was created in 1600 as an oil painting on canvas. It was executed by Frans Pourbus the Younger, a painter active in the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, and originally belonged to the Gonzaga family’s collection in Mantua. By the early 17th century the work entered the imperial Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, where it has remained part of their holdings.
The painting was later displayed at Ambras Castle, forming part of the broader Gonzaga collection that was transferred to Austrian archducal patronage.

The painting was displayed in the 2005 exhibition "Gonzaga: Power and Patronage" at the Kunsthistorisches Museum and again in the 2012 exhibition "Renaissance Portraits of the Italian Court" at the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.
Context
Painted in 1600 by Frans Pourbus the Younger, the portrait of Vincenzo I Gonzaga exemplifies the Flemish artist's contribution to late Renaissance court portraiture. The work originally formed part of the extensive Gonzaga collections before entering the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, where it remains a key example of Pourbus's output during his service to European nobility. The painting is frequently discussed in scholarship alongside the artist's other commissions for the Mantuan court, such as the portrait of Eleonora de' Medici.
Its provenance traces a direct line from the ducal holdings of Mantua to the imperial collections of Austria, highlighting the historical dispersal of the Gonzaga art treasury. Art historical analysis often situates this piece within the broader context of Pourbus's career, which bridged Flemish traditions with Italian courtly expectations.
