About this work

This black-and-white scene shows a group of people gathered around a dead or dying man. One person is kneeling beside him, holding his hand, while another stands nearby with their arms raised. A ladder leans against the wall in the background, and a few scattered objects—like a broken chain and a small stone—lie on the ground. Notice how the artist uses strong contrasts between light and dark to show emotion and shape. The lines and shadows make the figures look dramatic and real. Look up chiaroscuro to see how this technique works in other art.
