The documented ownership chain begins with Robert Gerry Hall of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, who acquired the piece during the 1920s.
Hall subsequently sold the canvas in 1948 to the collectors Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch. The work entered the public trust when the Garbisches gifted it to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., in 1955.
