Rama and Sita is a 1810 paint by Unknown, a Patna School of Painting work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows a group of people gathered under a golden canopy. The central figures sit on a raised platform draped in blue, surrounded by others in bright, colorful robes. The background has a yellow wall with a garden scene, and the whole image is framed by a dark border with white flowers. Notice how the figures’ faces are all turned toward the central couple, creating a sense of focus. The bright colors and detailed patterns suggest this was made to tell a story. Look up Romanticism to see how this style used emotion and vivid details.
The painting depicts Rama and Sita seated on an ornate throne beneath an intricately adorned royal umbrella. Surrounding the couple are Rama’s three brothers alongside an assembly of monkeys and bears. Rendered in opaque watercolour on paper, the work dates to 1810 and is attributed to an unknown artist.
