Fra Angelico employs delicate, blended pigments to achieve a gentle luminosity on the monk’s face, a technique reminiscent of sfumato that softens edges and creates a seamless transition between light and shadow. The restrained palette, warm browns for hair and beard, a dark blue field, focuses attention on the serene countenance.

Active in the 1400s, Fra Angelico worked primarily for Dominican institutions, notably the convent of San Marco in Florence, where he received patronage from Cosimo de’ Medici. While most of his output consists of fresco cycles, this panel portrait entered the Alte Pinakothek’s holdings in the 19th century, where it remains on display.
