Venus Disarming Mars, Drapery Study (verso) is a 1634 by Peter Paul Rubens, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows two rough, swirling figures tangled together. The left side is dark and smudgy, like a storm cloud, while the right side has quick, loose lines—arms and legs twisted in motion. The paper looks old and worn, with faint brown stains. The dark shape on the left might be a cloak or a heap of fabric, while the right side shows a body curled up, almost like someone wrestling. The lines are fast and messy, as if the artist was testing ideas. Next, look up Baroque to see how this sketch fits into that dramatic, movement-filled style.
Sir Peter Paul Rubens ( ROO-bənz; Dutch: ; 28 June 1577 – 30 May 1640) was a Flemish artist and diplomat.
