The Rural Idyll

The rural idyll is the countryside as a dream rather than a place of labour: shepherds at rest, harvests gathered in golden light, gardens and meadows where nothing is hard. The pastoral tradition reaches back to Virgil and was painted again and again — by Claude Lorrain in his luminous Arcadian landscapes, by the Rococo masters in their fêtes among the trees, by the Barbizon painters who softened the real toil of farming into something tender. The idyll is frankly a fantasy, usually painted for people who did not work the land, and that distance is part of its sweetness. The light is almost always warm and the mood serene or quietly joyful. Watch for the absence of effort — figures recline, animals graze, the work is done or has never started. The rural idyll is the picture of the world as we wish it were: ordered, abundant, and at peace, with the sun always somewhere near the horizon.
