Dutch painters in Utrecht who absorbed Caravaggio's dramatic lighting and naturalism in Rome and carried it north in the 1610s and 1620s. Hendrick ter Brugghen, Gerard van Honthorst and Dirck van Baburen made the city the principal channel of Caravaggism into northern Europe.
